Is there a difference between architectural lighting and holiday lights?
The word sounds like an upgrade charge, but there is an actual distinction under it. Outlining a building traces its edges. Architectural lighting responds to the structure. One treats the house as a silhouette. The other treats it as a set of surfaces, angles and depths. You do not have to name any of it to know what you are looking at. The useful test is whether somebody can point at your building and tell you what the plan responds to. If the answer is specific to your house, there is a design behind it. If it describes a product, you are talking to a salesperson.
The parts that do the work
Look at almost any house and a few things stand out. Peaks, columns, dormers, a material change, a covered entry. Those are the anchors, and everything else is there to hold them together.
Contrast is the tool
Most people assume brighter is better. It is backwards. Depth needs shadow, and the dark sections carry as much of the design as the bright ones. Light everything evenly and the building goes flat.A building lit this way reads as considered rather than decorated, and most people notice it without being able to name why.
Residential and commercial
On a house, the brief is curb appeal and a well lit approach to the door. For a business, the facade is doing marketing after sunset. A lit facade is legible from further away than lettering, and it can shift color for a season or an event.
Where the LED system fits
A permanent LED system is the same hardware doing both jobs. One install, two functions, and the architectural one runs the other eleven months.
Grazing, and the other techniques without the jargon
There are a few basic approaches. Washing is broad, flat light on a wall, good for large simple areas. Grazing makes a rough surface show its relief. Uplighting points from the ground upward, which is dramatic on columns and trees and unflattering on almost everything else.
Warm or cooler on stone and brick
There is more than one white, and the right one depends on

Warm white suits most residential materials, which is why it is the default for houses. Cooler suits glass and grey, and it is easy to overshoot. Mixing them on one building is what looks wrong.
